Laucala Island, Fiji

May 14, 2011

After a bit of a hiccup with our arrival we finally arrived in paradise! Laucala’s concierge in Nadi escorted us through the airport before we were whisked away on Laucala’s private plane the King Air BC for our 45 minute flight to the island, this was an experience in it’s own.

Feeling very excited to experience Laucala (pronounced Lothala) we arrived at the islands private runway and were greeted by Maja the GM and many of the staff singing the welcome song, after a lovely introduction we were then driven off in their black land-rovers through the lush thick vegetation, which was definitely a Jarrasic Park moment. Whilst getting driven to our residence our eyes were so wide open in amazement at this island paradise – WOW, WOW, WOW.

But the WOWness continued when we arrived at our Plantation Residence, we could not believe our eyes, this residence is just INCREDIBLE. The furnishings, the space… its huge, the pool the size of some hotel pools, the gardens, the living area, the bedroom, the bathroom, the outdoor bath, the yoga deck, the outdoor dining sala, the privacy, the ocean… this is absolute heaven.

Each residence comes with a Club Car parked in its own cute little garage, we jump in the buggy, hungry and cruise down to the Beach Bar. Specialising in barbecued seafood and meats, we sit down and enjoy the view. We were greeted by a smiling waiter who talked us through all our options, which was basically anything we wanted, we order a selection of meats, seafood, some sides and of course a cocktail!! Within minutes we were enjoying the most delicious fresh food one could imagine, after we finish, the lovely waiter asked us what we wanted for desserts, mmmm…. she then suggested the ‘lollypops”… mmmmm.. we both looked at each other thinking….“lollypops” so I then asked her some questions, we learnt they were ice-cream, so I asked about the flavours.. chocolate, vanilla, coconut… this was starting to sound very interesting, so we said “why not” she wanted to bring us two, but we insisted we would share, but now I understand why she had this look like “you just wait”, she came back with a bowl of ice cubes with 6 choc-coated lollypops sitting on top, WOW… these were AMAZING, homemade ice-cream and chocolate, I was instantly addicted to these delicious taste sensations which of course became a daily experience for us at Laucala!

After a gorgeous night lazing around in our villa and a sound sleep, I woke to my birthday remembering I am in paradise, it is early and the most glorious sunny day!! Starving we jump in the buggy and head to Plantation House for breakfast. Yet another amazing experience, it’s just getting better and better… To my suprise the staff all gathered around our table singing Happy Birthday in Fijiaan with a yummy chocolate cake, oh..so sweet.

Time for some adventure, we head down to the water sports centre where we discovered all the toys, Laucala has everything. Manos was ready to arrange whatever we desired, we wanted to check out the surf, so he arranged for us – surf boards, stand up paddle boards, some snorkeling gear, a Jetski and off we went in one of their boats. A beautiful journey on the water looking back at this stunning island as we go past the different beaches, restaurants and residences. We reach the break, its small but perfect for stand up paddle boarding and snorkeling, we spent hours in the water, while retreating back to the boat for snacks and refreshments as we pleased. We head back to our residence, swim in our pool, relax for a bit before lunch at Pool Bar. We explore the island after lunch visiting the farm and farm animals, the equestrian centre, and we learn all about the operations, wow, what is involved for this island to function at the level it does is mind blowing. We end the afternoon with a pampering experience at the hilltop spa, oh what bliss…. we did not want this day to end and luckily it wasn’t about to..we still had our evening at the gorgeous Seagrass Restaurant hanging off a cliff overlooking the ocean while watching the sunset. This birthday experience is going to be very hard to top!!

Another lovely morning, another delicious breakfast, another amazing day on Laucala! Another boat trip out to the surf with all the boards, this time it was bigger, more jet-skiing around the islands, and then an afternoon of game fishing on the Riviera! This was a treat indeed, the luxurious Riviera was all prepared and ready to go with some lovely lunch served on board by the staff. James was fantastic, he got us all ready to go and it wasn’t that long before I was playing tug-a-war with my first large fish that i’ve ever caught….a Wahoo!! The chef was ready and waiting for catch when we came back to shore, and what a delicious meal that was made that evening at the fine dining Plantation Restaurant.

Our last day at Laucala involved more water activities, a tour of the island including a look inside some of the other residences and finishing with a visit to the Hilltop Residence which will set you back US$35,000 per night!! Suitable for up to 6 people, situated on the highest point of the resort, capturing 360 degree, panoramic views around Laucala Island, this residence is something else.. basically a resort within a resort!! it definitely was worth a peak. We finish the afternoon with another relaxing experience at the spa, before racing to catch the sunset at Rock Lounge then heading for our private Teppanyaki experience at the Teppanyaki Bar hanging off the cliff. Wow, this was really amazing, the view, the colours fading in the sky, private chef, impeccible service,  and incredible flavours!! …such a beautiful romantic evening and one that you could never miss!!

It was a very sad feeling to know that we had to leave this island paradise, the smiling staff that seem to pop out of know where to greet and service you, the dining experiences that really can’t compare to anything else I have ever experienced, the fun and adventure, the feeling that you can do whatever you want, whenever you want, coming home to your residence each afternoon and evening to suprise treats, the fine detail of absolutely everything, Laucala is heaven on earth and an experience of a lifetime!
