Ratua Island, Vanuatu
May 6, 2011
Just arrived at Ratua Island, very much a Robinson Crusoe feel, we get shown to our room the Masters Villa….Wow!! its incredible and so unique, over 200 years old these homes have been transported from Indonesia, you can instantly see great care has been taken to restore and create a feeling so different from anywhere I have experienced, vintage style furnishings, everything open, beautiful gardens and your own little private beach encove with sun lounges.
Time for some lunch and I am starving, we head down to the beach for a BBQ lunch, such a beautiful setting indeed. The chef has a selection of meats and salad to choose from, we decide to try a bit of everything, the meat was barbequed in front of us and was absolutely to die for, the best I have tasted in a long time!! Their organic produce is amazing!! The meat is local with most of the produce being grown in Ratua’s own vegetable garden.
After very full tummy’s we relax for a bit, it started to rain but we still decided to explore, we got in the boat and headed for a kayak adventure to the Blue Hole, off we went kayaking through the beautiful lagoon, amongst all the vegetation, when we finally reached the Blue Hole it was breathtaking, even in the rain, we jumped in for a swim and just took in the beauty surrounding us, a definite must do.
The next day we explored the farm and farm animals, visited the horse stables and off we went for an afternoon horse ride around the island, along the beach and through the shallow lagoon, this was a highlight. Then it was time for a massage at the most beautiful Overwater Spa, and what a treat.
In summary, Ratua Island is a very different, unique and amazing experience. An eco-friendly, self-sufficient, spiritual property that offers privacy and rustic luxuries. There is no pool but for a reason, its not part of their concept and being so close to the waters edge with the most beautiful lagoons to swim in, it really does not take away from your experience. Its small and intimate, with great service that gives you feeling of being part of a small village. Ratua Island includes all meals in their rates, the island is located 30 minutes by boat from Santo in, I think the best area of Vanuatu. Ratua Island is a great option for weddings as you can book out the whole property and experience the most gorgeous intimate wedding with your closest friends and family.
